Director Pantelis Voulgaris with the filming of his movie on the Greek island of Andros, got his wish, and accomplished his goal, “to deepen as much as I can in the human factor; In the sorrows and the hopes of a human being” and now we wait for a dream to come true in gaining entry as a nominee for the 87th Academy of Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

The film, Little England, (shot on location on the Greek island of Andros) portrays the life of two sisters who fall in love with the same man through the 1930’s and 40’s. Director Voulgaris captures not only our hearts but also our minds as we travel with the men over harsh seas and witness a unique kind of strength in the women they left behind.

We watch in awe, as they struggle in their organized life with conflicted hearts.  The people of Andros are driven by love:  love of the sea, which is rough, and a love for each other, that is not always possible.  We relate, and realize that one doesn’t always get what is deeply desired.

Little England is a truly beautiful film exposing the fragility of the human spirit and the strength in love that has the force to take over every cell in our body.

The exceptional acting skills of the cast drew the audience in and made us forget that we were in the cinema and not on the windy island of Andros; this was absolutely an amazing cast of great actors!

About the film score

Twenty-six year old composer and singer, Katerina Polemi, half Andriot (from Andros where the film was set) and  half Brazilian, immensely enjoyed her first experience in music for film.  She acknowledges what a great opportunity this was, given to her by Little England’s famous Greek director Pantelis Voulgaris! Katerina wrote many types of music besides the soundtrack; songs that were required for the script such as waltz, tango, a 1940s Russian song, a traditional song called Mpalos from the islands, Emvatirio and more.

Read more next week on the beautiful film score in Little England in an interview with the impressive and talented singer Katerina Polemi!
