Festive Syntagma Square

One of best times of the year to visit Syntagma square and walk down to Monisteraki is during the holidays.  The atmosphere is great with families walking around taking photos with Santa, colorful balloons and lots of great shopping. Before you start off on your walk grab a koulouri (round bread with sesame seeds) to tie you over.

One way to get downtown is by taking the metro train which is not only easy but many stations display historical artifacts and ruins to look at.

Famous Ermou street has everything from fast fashion retailer Zara to Alexandrakis, an upscale shop built in 1933 which has kept their same authentic traditional appeal.

After you finish window shopping there are so many places to stop in for a cup of coffee or a bite to eat.  We chose Avocado in the hopes of off-setting all the over indulgent foods and drinks that we have been enjoying.

Before you head home drop by Matsouka, which has been around since 1959, to fill a few small bags of a variety of mixed nuts, dried fruits or other Greek specialty sweets.

Hopefully if you live in Greece you will have a chance to walk around this historic square and be a part of the energy.  If you live elsewhere, well then hopefully you will find yourself having an Athenian experience soon!
